Any kind of hit from a retail pack is always a nice surprise, and in this case I managed to pull this sharp-looking red crackle parallel of Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxptNFdz9oLWrImVzanHq2np2C3qHn_8XFK9bfolX6ckF1TblQqY-e_lOnsLwNwdkkQhx-sjrR4p1PaBso8AY_acUjZsCkEWG0kdCgSRy8LqzvS0bwTw1n2Cs0mJccuTfmfu7mMqOvjO5KuSngp4AYQhKzsPIRcaZJnlO3OtZ4lw_whlJtJTe3XMb7PIqw/s4032/20240317_110055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxptNFdz9oLWrImVzanHq2np2C3qHn_8XFK9bfolX6ckF1TblQqY-e_lOnsLwNwdkkQhx-sjrR4p1PaBso8AY_acUjZsCkEWG0kdCgSRy8LqzvS0bwTw1n2Cs0mJccuTfmfu7mMqOvjO5KuSngp4AYQhKzsPIRcaZJnlO3OtZ4lw_whlJtJTe3XMb7PIqw/s320/20240317_110055.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p>I just missed the "eBay 1-of-1" - this one is serial number 6/199. 😄</p><p>I have to admit, I didn't realize just how strong of a year Kim had in 2023. He posted a 5.8 WAR, with a .260 avg, 17 homers, 60 RBI and 38 steals, capped off with a Gold Glove at a premium defensive position. Wow, so 8 years since my last post, huh? Did I miss anything? I'm sure not much happened while I was away, I feel like it's been a pretty boring near-decade....</p><p>Anyhoo, I thought maybe it was time to fire up the ol' blog again. I have no idea if I'm still on the blog roll or not, so if you are reading this maybe you could do me a solid and just say hi in a comment? It would be nice to know if anyone is actually seeing this post! 😄</p><p>And now, on to the actual point of the post - I managed to get my hands on a Griffey card that I've been trying to get since before I even started this blog in the first place!! </p><p>I've loved the 1998 Pinnacle Epix cards since they first came out. It has always been a dream of mine to get all the Griffeys, but I've been stuck trying to track down the Purple and Emerald Season cards that came out of 1998 Zenith for years. Scratch one off the list!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwNyCBxGp3C1o387LGZ0K4Eka4ajDeRfl7ZLTuDZfoIKqlVDfG3K4EeZ51dF2AH9NCEZoK6hKA2KdNx4i6wuWtiUobhzRRu03jEULt54xhPX0-u2O6vNUcsW6guLRgOQSejRDBjtdjJF38_2U7BfsIWFuFFBIDuLgmiDZV1ahuLEzUegeyYZDRCd7Kyz7C/s4032/20240308_234151.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwNyCBxGp3C1o387LGZ0K4Eka4ajDeRfl7ZLTuDZfoIKqlVDfG3K4EeZ51dF2AH9NCEZoK6hKA2KdNx4i6wuWtiUobhzRRu03jEULt54xhPX0-u2O6vNUcsW6guLRgOQSejRDBjtdjJF38_2U7BfsIWFuFFBIDuLgmiDZV1ahuLEzUegeyYZDRCd7Kyz7C/s320/20240308_234151.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK8fIjFl3G6qrT1ILRILb6W6DOOesfqmSEzT-oe3NGs8uy4W2Ww3g14f0P7PS0_Ehb4t2Nl23ytN3U6mzrEcv-muE-zYR3WtKMa2adrLLMjRjTB3VqmVRBzQ-aMm6Ch_tBl0gA9wjIK68m73EVbL4Z5fRe_wccDQoNttTzRqHZvDB4GEJYkEFM1A146BTC/s4032/20240308_234043.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK8fIjFl3G6qrT1ILRILb6W6DOOesfqmSEzT-oe3NGs8uy4W2Ww3g14f0P7PS0_Ehb4t2Nl23ytN3U6mzrEcv-muE-zYR3WtKMa2adrLLMjRjTB3VqmVRBzQ-aMm6Ch_tBl0gA9wjIK68m73EVbL4Z5fRe_wccDQoNttTzRqHZvDB4GEJYkEFM1A146BTC/s320/20240308_234043.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p>With the addition of that purple beauty, I've only got one more left to go.</p><p>Apparently one of the Emerald Season cards was actually sold on eBay recently.....for $350. I suppose that price is unsurprising, given that Pinnacle only made 30 of those cards to start with. Add to that the odd gimmick Zenith had that year with regular cards hidden inside of 5×7 cards, and there are almost certainly less than 30 out there in the wild. But, maybe someday....</p><div><div><div>It's good to be back. <br />
It's been a long time since I've posted, but I definitely wanted to check in this week since I'm expecting big news for my boy Griffey! (For those who may not be aware, they announce the result of the baseball Hall of Fame voting on Wednesday).<br />
<br />
I haven't been able to do much in the way of card collecting lately, but I did manage to pick up a few new Griffeys here and there:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAYsXQH6qGzN8av0xfIa_rAIRmC-fCKe4UVlY8JTrEEvzJayeqbD-GBQsPQxRDEbJa4HJ6vldaJRr8fLKQpbhfURHLUX6fTH6-Wl4h_h4nO0DariHzY1Mkhb6og-zd5yA4qZl1IhS-C91J/s1600/Griffey+16-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAYsXQH6qGzN8av0xfIa_rAIRmC-fCKe4UVlY8JTrEEvzJayeqbD-GBQsPQxRDEbJa4HJ6vldaJRr8fLKQpbhfURHLUX6fTH6-Wl4h_h4nO0DariHzY1Mkhb6og-zd5yA4qZl1IhS-C91J/s400/Griffey+16-1.jpg" width="297" /></a></div>
<br />
This 2000 Topps Star Stars insert is one of those "how did I never get this card before?" acquisitions. Holographic background? Yes, please.<br />
<br />
The rest I was able to pick up on the cheap in one of those eBay "Pick 10" lots. For once I finally remembered to go looking for one of these insert lots while the set is still current, so I was able to score before the sellers all got picked over. A nice haul for just a few bucks!<br />

I must say, these Topps designs like the last one for Heart of the Order drive me absolutely nuts. If you can't make the card still look good when it doesn't have a "relic" attached to it, then it is a poor design. Unfortunately this has been a common theme among Topps inserts the past few years.<br />
<br />
Happy New Year to all!Milwaukee Southpawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07760646759273077821noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3478449641509656566.post-76928364151447971782015-08-20T21:37:00.000-07:002015-08-20T21:37:35.543-07:00The Wright StuffI can probably count on one hand the number of cards I have that are numbered to 10 or less. Oddly enough, two of the cards I do have are from the same player - Mets favorite David Wright. Even odder, both are #8 out of 10!<br />

A lifetime .298 hitter with 231 HRs, 910 Runs and 943 RBIs, Wright has been among the better players of the last decade. Not a bad guy to pull a rare card of!<br />
<br />
I absolutely LOVE those gold framed-Masterpieces. I've been trying to add one of each color frame to my Griffey set, but unfortunately they don't seem to come up very often on eBay. Worse, Griffey has TWO cards in that set!!<br />
<br />
For the record for any Mets fans out there, I could be persuaded to part with these....<br />

<br />
Now don't get me wrong, triples are a lot of fun to watch - the initial excitement of the hit, watching the runner turn on that extra gear rounding second, the building tension of "will he make it??" But to me, there was always a much more obvious candidate for baseball's most exciting play....<br />
<br />
I speak of course of the play at the plate!<br />
<br />
To me the play at the plate has all the virtues of a triple, as you can see the play developing, but then you also get the added excitement that scoring a run is on the line, plus you have the potential for a bone-jarring collision with the catcher. In my opinion it's no contest which is "most exciting."<br />
<br />
And now, here's a selection of cards that capture baseball's moment of truth - the play at the plate~!<br />
<br />
<b><u>1998 Pinnacle #77 - Ray Durham</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Looks like Ray really brought the wood on this collision. I love that the photographer also managed to catch both helmets flying through the air.<br />
<br />
<b><u>1995 UD Collector's Choice #55 - Sid Bream</u></b><br />
<br />

<br />
Easily one of baseball's most famous plays at the plate, who can forget Sid Bream chugging around third and just barely beating Barry Bonds' throw to win Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS??<br />

From the photographer's perspective, the beauty of the play at the plate....<br />
<br />
<b><u>1999 Stadium Club #127 - Brady Anderson</u></b><br />

....is that it can count as a photo for more than one player!<br />
<br />
<b><u>2012 Topps Chrome #29 - Carl Crawford</u></b><br />

I love this shot. Classic gear, old school mask, the eyes laser-focused on the ball even with a runner bearing down on him - to me it captures the essence of "catcher."<br />

It also prompted me to go search eBay to scratch a few cards off my checklist for one of my all-time favorite sets - the 1993 Score Select Chase Stars. <br />
<br />
As luck would have it I managed to snag 4 cards from the same seller, so with combined shipping I got these for just $10:<br />

As I've written before, these cards look so much better than their scan gives credit for. I think these may be the first cards to use the Dufex technology, and I find them mesmerizing to look at. I try not to overuse this, but this really is a set where if there is a player you like on the list, you MUST pick up a copy.<br />
<br />
With the addition of these four I now need only 5 more to complete the 24-card set (I have a Griffey, but I want a second one to keep with this set). Unfortunately there are a few expensive ones remaining with Griffey, Maddux (usually around $10) and Ripken (usually $15-$20).<br />
<br />
But they will be mine. Oh yes, they WILL be mine.<br />

Imagine my shock when not only did I pull a hit card, but a JUMBO relic~!<br />

That's right - an extra large Wrestlemania 30 mat relic featuring the Texas Rattlesnake!<br />
<br />
Now granted Austin was only there for the opening promo of the show, but it was a really good one celebrating the 30-year history of Wrestlemania:<br />

He was kind enough to send me a nice stack of cards from my second-favorite player of all-time, Jeff Bagwell!<br />

Griffey had the sweetest swing of his generation, but Bagwell's may have been the most fearsome. Starting from his ominous, crouching stance... <br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9EYRqqBbJB-guvicKgwY1A8z-HgxX_cZBd3y9oEcsik8lGQzgyud30QlIcQPY0ClbNZ5E3ewer7OL_3JDMs2kdAHTAFG9pqQB2Jq-PiIhLoGzGG7Dubf9fZiSZJ17bhQ8kRvV7SyJXWpK/s1600/Bagwell+Stance.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9EYRqqBbJB-guvicKgwY1A8z-HgxX_cZBd3y9oEcsik8lGQzgyud30QlIcQPY0ClbNZ5E3ewer7OL_3JDMs2kdAHTAFG9pqQB2Jq-PiIhLoGzGG7Dubf9fZiSZJ17bhQ8kRvV7SyJXWpK/s640/Bagwell+Stance.jpeg" width="432" /></a></div>
<br />
...and then just exploding through the ball:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LMammvUMOEM/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LMammvUMOEM?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">That pitch was on the OUTER half of the plate.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
It's a crime that Bagwell hasn't made the Hall of Fame yet. I've never heard any kind of real evidence against him as far as PEDs, only guilt by association because he was around Ken Caminiti. His career numbers speak for themselves - 449 HRs, 1517 Runs, 1529 RBIs, 2314 hits, .297 career average, .408 career OBP and 202 SBs. I think the average and stolen bases are the most surprising for many people - he wasn't just a power hitter, he was a complete player! And those power numbers came while spending two-thirds of his career playing home games in the Astrodome.<br />
<br />
Thanks a lot Junior Junkie! I will have to return the favor sometime in the near future. :)<br />

Everybody loves a highlight reel catch, and I love it even more when those moments get captured on cardboard!<br />
<br />
<b><u>2010 Upper Deck #427 - Aaron Rowand</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjhr6Peq2tLMBnicsIZaFRqC2B56dn2b33KiH2YvdgrCG_OFHN88OjrEOziQTMvB1smsZLrtWf2LAca0sqHb6ZWLVPN66iUFII-dz-He3NLmNPPzPXrHPrlKdSaqDtb9LHSMy5_dAiwZ9Z/s1600/BTW+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="361" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjhr6Peq2tLMBnicsIZaFRqC2B56dn2b33KiH2YvdgrCG_OFHN88OjrEOziQTMvB1smsZLrtWf2LAca0sqHb6ZWLVPN66iUFII-dz-He3NLmNPPzPXrHPrlKdSaqDtb9LHSMy5_dAiwZ9Z/s400/BTW+1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The rare 4-way catch attempt.<br />
<br />
<b><u>1998 Stadium Club #20 - Jay Buhner</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8F9DYAhJf412_HK9pXbEzbz7JyYPw1njrXpEd4dRuJE0Zx2M-x-7yfNfm7VsMxsOQ3Gl0oZjspk1u6CMA6JI29hRhUIAk7Gr38yFAsJOCnGCLkRduFVAbgycP-JEJnsP6iJ3fvD0NZbo4/s1600/BTW+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8F9DYAhJf412_HK9pXbEzbz7JyYPw1njrXpEd4dRuJE0Zx2M-x-7yfNfm7VsMxsOQ3Gl0oZjspk1u6CMA6JI29hRhUIAk7Gr38yFAsJOCnGCLkRduFVAbgycP-JEJnsP6iJ3fvD0NZbo4/s400/BTW+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Some pretty good leaping ability from Buhner here, considering he isn't using the wall to help him at all. Also, you gotta love the look on the fan's face. :)<br />
<br />
<b><u>2014 Topps #301 - Shane Victorino</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaBcPSdGQTlSy2_NzSCcAaFTQ4iW64am2q-HyzAgxCI86Gdzh_d_kpWynJ2awUBCH3fbbQhQ7DEXvLu64zPYeW-NbFPsh2hUCEl4uNSlxSMPdFvR55gvYCMmLugFwDF_jcv76IO_5Lwmqs/s1600/BTW+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="362" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaBcPSdGQTlSy2_NzSCcAaFTQ4iW64am2q-HyzAgxCI86Gdzh_d_kpWynJ2awUBCH3fbbQhQ7DEXvLu64zPYeW-NbFPsh2hUCEl4uNSlxSMPdFvR55gvYCMmLugFwDF_jcv76IO_5Lwmqs/s400/BTW+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Yikes. Sailing into that low Fenway park wall, I can't imagine this one ended very well for ol' Shane...<br />
<br />
<b><u>1999 Fleer Ultra #25 - Andruw Jones</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghIzcCnEjUQqA_LcezuTMVVCMKvE37dR2Zs9LeI5vjYRkkt1ypaHtlB8WM7LuRtxI_4IbXw7FUH9-vqboZ99L_OW1SM3WfejwdzEz7Vtn5M0dgQpwCQGO8nDVWSzc5m2h_rj3hBPu4GnWM/s1600/BTW+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="363" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghIzcCnEjUQqA_LcezuTMVVCMKvE37dR2Zs9LeI5vjYRkkt1ypaHtlB8WM7LuRtxI_4IbXw7FUH9-vqboZ99L_OW1SM3WfejwdzEz7Vtn5M0dgQpwCQGO8nDVWSzc5m2h_rj3hBPu4GnWM/s400/BTW+4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Crazy hops from Andruw in this shot. And the way he is holding his arm it looks like he actually caught it!<br />
<br />
<b><u>2010 Upper Deck Season Biography #SB-40 - Torii Hunter</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ZFvIica1RK-_-jur1gH51WpoGhDOE0MC9Ti3X467G1x3jIeHyvt39WYE2nX9SkUnPFMByuga61O4xTBVXYQIDc7scluk5VTHSUcnFcQuGNfT1PRB6OH_AyVPPQ_P47OqTgcZhxbK2ofQ/s1600/BTW+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="367" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2ZFvIica1RK-_-jur1gH51WpoGhDOE0MC9Ti3X467G1x3jIeHyvt39WYE2nX9SkUnPFMByuga61O4xTBVXYQIDc7scluk5VTHSUcnFcQuGNfT1PRB6OH_AyVPPQ_P47OqTgcZhxbK2ofQ/s400/BTW+5.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
An absolutely GORGEOUS photo of Torii doing what he does best. The photographer couldn't possibly have timed this one any better.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2014 Topps #326 - Khris Davis</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxr3pYw-n6Y47CB0n25Z36xeMiaX6QkZBCk77lLgOVWz5gyEyMVkBGNNbjSIC6PtpF4f9nG6-et3TfNz7v4EhEFEOcUbuEGPZfrzxn0_wAgpamtnvrF3KMVuW69u0i5kMGsXp9kPaXbky4/s1600/BTW+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="361" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxr3pYw-n6Y47CB0n25Z36xeMiaX6QkZBCk77lLgOVWz5gyEyMVkBGNNbjSIC6PtpF4f9nG6-et3TfNz7v4EhEFEOcUbuEGPZfrzxn0_wAgpamtnvrF3KMVuW69u0i5kMGsXp9kPaXbky4/s400/BTW+6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
A look that says "Ohhh this is gonna suck..." I hope he at least held on to the ball!<br />
<br />
<b><u>2011 Topps #252 - Michael Saunders</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBOKhIGR8twrnv91_q6t0gVfPqXzETPbCox1nDyQvaDJIGLdqzvGEdvFtOKMriXo4l69Y1yhcyAxfMl5HnrTqxx1OlqbMUNOr_iYbX-Jqm1Qs16ypPbFau7P6EJuFiLViyA4KkIH5rFre_/s1600/BTW+7+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="353" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBOKhIGR8twrnv91_q6t0gVfPqXzETPbCox1nDyQvaDJIGLdqzvGEdvFtOKMriXo4l69Y1yhcyAxfMl5HnrTqxx1OlqbMUNOr_iYbX-Jqm1Qs16ypPbFau7P6EJuFiLViyA4KkIH5rFre_/s400/BTW+7+.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Another beautifully-timed photo with the ball falling into the glove. Catching the Mariners logo as the background is a nice touch as well.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2014 Stadium Club #183 - Carlos Gomez</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXs-1dvkf8nQuAnD7ZN3ndADdH2vrJkwJ6oVmSpehtVp2sgaoIJEcLk90Os55zUYAGpjWBttTjIWEwcToB7ZA6d0uXXJjKNXUWqPQ9wA8CtxHDKxF8pP1tMiPi7QGB8twMBbHU9lyAsLOX/s1600/BTW+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="365" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXs-1dvkf8nQuAnD7ZN3ndADdH2vrJkwJ6oVmSpehtVp2sgaoIJEcLk90Os55zUYAGpjWBttTjIWEwcToB7ZA6d0uXXJjKNXUWqPQ9wA8CtxHDKxF8pP1tMiPi7QGB8twMBbHU9lyAsLOX/s400/BTW+8.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
So close....Gomez has made a lot of great plays for us. Sadly, I think he is likely to be in another uniform within the next 6 weeks (if he can get himself healthy that is).<br />
<br />
<b><u>1995 Upper Deck #29 - Geronimo Berroa</u></b><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFm4Mv1EXwaU6LRlVrZh9MLnEhpJSv9YBkMz1r6CYxs2Y3kpwHeRuvAppOjQ2AC6L4xdKxiDnVbhmAn1JD762egLHFtTfpPrHVTqprWMxbUd-vOgFKvmgJxQ19In2Hiuf94VWlRCybWpHL/s1600/BTW+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFm4Mv1EXwaU6LRlVrZh9MLnEhpJSv9YBkMz1r6CYxs2Y3kpwHeRuvAppOjQ2AC6L4xdKxiDnVbhmAn1JD762egLHFtTfpPrHVTqprWMxbUd-vOgFKvmgJxQ19In2Hiuf94VWlRCybWpHL/s400/BTW+9.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
A cool card from one of the best names in the game. I love this one because of the element of suspense - you really can't tell if he was gonna get his glove on it or not.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2007 Upper Deck #421 - Mike Cameron</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw1wfRR9pYvYwOz3CbZ0sbOnJuFWhw98hAub-37ZbxtDC0p4qr2TWO_oHdBSDWPtKedk32VaZ-vHRml7j-cxI6Sz7wWEh7s1SIG4OcOCwNfvbNmYA1yF_AeaHuYwr0TJjHR-YQA_tHxQVl/s1600/BTW+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw1wfRR9pYvYwOz3CbZ0sbOnJuFWhw98hAub-37ZbxtDC0p4qr2TWO_oHdBSDWPtKedk32VaZ-vHRml7j-cxI6Sz7wWEh7s1SIG4OcOCwNfvbNmYA1yF_AeaHuYwr0TJjHR-YQA_tHxQVl/s400/BTW+10.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Just like the previous card, this shot of former-Brewer Cameron captures the "will he bring it back?" moment of suspense perfectly.<br />
<br />
And finally, as a parting bonus, enjoy some great 80s metal from Accept!:<br />

We do a hybrid auction/draft, with everyone using $100 fake dollars to get 5 players via auction, and then we switch to a 20-round snake draft. 12-team league, weekly head-to-head matchups. Categories are 6x6 - Batting average, Runs, HRs, RBIs, Stolen bases and OBP for offense; Quality Starts, Ks, ERA, WHIP, Saves and Holds for pitching.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Donora Lefty Legends are coming off an awful season in 2014 (5-17), so we cant do any worse!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here we go!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I am targeting Altuve and either Gomez or McCutcheon in the auction.<br />
<br />
Update 1 - oh, and GO BADGERS~!<br />
<br />
Lots of huge bids going around. Trout and Kershaw both go for over $70. Unfortunately I lost out on McCutcheon, as I wasn't willing to go to $62 for him. Still have Gomez and Altuve out there.<br />
<br />
Almost picked up Anthony Rizzo, but ended up letting him go at a low price. Couldn't bring myself to have a Cub be my first player. :-)<br />
<br />
We're on the board! First player - Jose Abreu. I couldn't pass up the deal he was going for. Planning on laying dormant now until Altuve or Gomez comes up.<br />
<br />
(60 seconds later) - wow, that was fast. Gomez comes up and I got him. Dont let me down Go-Go!!!<br />
<br />
Dammit!!! I got outbid for Altuve by the only guy left who could outbid me. Sonofa......<br />
<br />
I pick up Madison Bumgarner for a steal. Didn't really expect to get a pitcher here, but i'm ok with it.<br />
<br />
I rounded out the auction segment with Jose Reyes and Anthony Rendon. Rendon is eligible at both 2B and 3B, so that is a nice bonus. I'm feeling pretty good about the core i've put together. If you believe Rotowire I got 4 of the top 31 overall.<br />
<br />
Picking 9th in the snake draft now. Probably going to target starting pitchers or closers first.<br />
<br />
Ok I lied. I picked up Hunter Pence first, loved the value there. Took Dodger closer Kenley Jansen on the rebound.<br />
<br />
Just realized Jansen is hurt and out for at least a couple weeks. Fuck.<br />
<br />
Picked up Pirates closer Mark Melancon and Ryan Zimmerman. Looks like I have locked in a path - we are going to win with offense, saves and holds, and starting pitching is going to be a crapshoot.<br />
<br />
Next another closer, Steve Cishek. And then Marlins OF Marcell Ozuna. I am REALLY trusting my magazines on the Ozuna pick. Both are VERY high on him. If they are right I got huge value here. I am hoping Neil Walker makes it back to me.<br />
<br />
Badgers back to the Final Four! Woot woot!<br />
<br />
Aaaand Walker makes it back! I get Walker and the shockingly still available Justin Morneau.<br />
<br />
If nothing else, this team is going to MASH.<br />
<br />
Next up, Toronto closer Brett Cecil and finally starting pitcher number two, Wily Peralta. Very surprised and happy Peralta was still there, since this is a room full of Brewer fans! It was a choice between Peralta and former Brewer Alcides Escobar, hopefully Escobar and his much-needed steals make it back around.<br />
<br />
Escobar made it, so I snatched him up. Then I rounded out my offensive starting lineup with catcher-eligible Evan Gattis. Again, this. Team. Will. MASH.<br />
<br />
Other than a fourth OF, it's gonna be all pitchers from here on out.<br />
<br />
Mike Fiers is next. STUNNED he was still available here. I am a big believer in him, LOVE this pick. Followed that up with Nationals pitcher Tanner Roark. Trusting the magazine again on that one.<br />
<br />
Time for a pair of Holds guys who are also potential closers - Danny Farquhar of Seattle and Jordan Walden of the Cardinals. I am hoping Nori Aoki is there for my next pick. He's a favorite of mine and also would be a nice source of steals.<br />
<br />
I got Nori! And my final two picks went deep into the starting pitcher list - Kevin Gausman of the Orioles and Jason Hammel of the Cubs.<br />
<br />
I am PUMPED about this team. I made an extra effort to prepare after last year's debacle and I think it really paid off. I think the offense is very good, as is the relief corps. If I can get anything at all from the starting pitchers (or pick up a couple off waivers during the season) I really think this team will contend.<br />
<br />

So much great stuff from back then.<br />
<br />
Case in point, the newest addition to my Griffey collection:<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(I used the COMC pic to save some time)</td></tr>

<br />
I fell in love with this card the moment I saw it on eBay. It doesn't come through well in the picture, but the lightning bolt is sparkly foil, not just printed on the background. Fleer Ultra had "Thunderclap" as an annual insert set for several years, so I will definitely go looking for the Griffeys from other years.<br />

On an only slightly related note - can we all agree that the opening of AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" is one of the best guitar riffs of all time?</div>

Today we focus on a GORGEOUS pair from 1998 Topps Gold Label. This is one of those sets where in my opinion, if you have a player you collect in the base set, then picking up a copy is an absolute MUST. They are THAT nice. The card stock is very sturdy and super glossy, the background is done in a "refractor" style, and the script lettering for the player names is beautiful.<br />
<br />
Each player has 3 cards in the set. "Class 1" cards have the name in gold foil and have a background shot of the player fielding, like so:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgce7TRNWUEtMiG0jZpIEyCrvPj9KQVkyPLddRKDXbhB3HIlTxE4oPMk9O-b4m-zLeA3bGMjFGtOBDeELQzl2iDw567pouLi0yIDLLieyfEdbGdCU0YkeFjzihj9UI-ZJy9lG5KUuXZojeZ/s1600/Griffey+Gold+Label+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgce7TRNWUEtMiG0jZpIEyCrvPj9KQVkyPLddRKDXbhB3HIlTxE4oPMk9O-b4m-zLeA3bGMjFGtOBDeELQzl2iDw567pouLi0yIDLLieyfEdbGdCU0YkeFjzihj9UI-ZJy9lG5KUuXZojeZ/s1600/Griffey+Gold+Label+1.jpg" height="381" width="400" /></a></div>
"Class 2" cards have the name in a sparkly silver foil and show the player running:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitUnB2IsYmWev25E8eXy8qaMQMFLB0shKXq29g_hmbS63A6xQUV-KSITx9pCIuDD7MpCUJW-Jm83-UWBrYzur2qzITjzBM7ByOq5VV-6oaSXMGSULRVupBE0CFPp8ZJhZcdQSLhun21Ww1/s1600/Griffey+Gold+Label+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitUnB2IsYmWev25E8eXy8qaMQMFLB0shKXq29g_hmbS63A6xQUV-KSITx9pCIuDD7MpCUJW-Jm83-UWBrYzur2qzITjzBM7ByOq5VV-6oaSXMGSULRVupBE0CFPp8ZJhZcdQSLhun21Ww1/s1600/Griffey+Gold+Label+2.jpg" height="381" width="400" /></a></div>
And "Class 3" cards (the most rare) have the name in sparkly gold foil, with the background photo being a hitting or pitching shot. I didn't add the "Class 3" Griffey yet, so no pic of that one.<br />
<br />
Here is the player checklist. Like I said, well worth tracking one down for your favorite players!<br />

His blog is one of my favorites, and he has quite the ambitious project - collecting every Topps set since 1980. My recent digging through my old cards led me to a handful he was looking for, so I was glad to do my part to bring him a tiny bit closer to his goal!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
He was kind enough to send me a nice envelope of cards in return, including some Platinum Diamonds:</div>

<div>
That Golden Moments card is actually a mini - I didn't even know they <i>made</i> minis of those cards that year! And I really like that Goudey style card from last year's Goodwin set. Something about that painting-esque picture and the card design really clicks for me.</div>

First, the Brewers had their 6-week death march where they managed to miss the playoffs entirely after leading the division for 150 days. And then today we had....whatever the hell that was that the Packers did. Without hyperbole, both were HISTORIC collapses in their respective sports, and both squandered golden opportunities at having a truly special season. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In light of all that, now seemed like a fitting time to post some nice Brewer cards I picked up for my team collection - a set of 9 black background cards from the 2011 set.</div>

<div>
<br /><div>
I hadn't seen any of these in person until now. They are pretty cool, the blackout effect really makes the player photo jump off of the card. I especially like the Gomez, Hoffman's 600th save, and team card celebration shots.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This group also includes a guy who may not be a Brewer for long - it appears the Crew is trading Yovani to the Rangers. Oddly, no one seems to have any idea what we are getting in return yet, One reporter speculated that the team might be clearing room to make a run at James Shields, which would be SWEET, but I doubt it's true.</div>
<div>

<div>
Welp, time to start counting the days until Pitchers & Catchers Report Day. "Hope springs eternal" and all that.....</div>

I don't have many Griffey doubles, and his collection is just <i>slightly</i> larger than mine, but I still managed to find two Griffey dupes in my binder that he didn't have. <br />
<br />

Lots of great stuff here. My favorites:<br />
<br />
-That photo on the 1997 Topps base card is SWEET. Classic Griffey pose, and love the bat dropping out of the frame. I'll have to pick up another copy of that one for my "great photos" binder.<br />
-Gotta love a matching set of base card and silver signature parallel for Collector's Choice<br />
-The 1994 Fleer Ultra Award Winners insert is one I remember wishing I could nab back in the day, I loved that design, so very happy to finally add that one to the list<br />
-The Upper Deck Fun Pack card actually has a heat-activated background - hold your thumb on it and you can see a cartoon of Griffey about to get the ol' pie in the face from a teammate!<br />
-That very first Topps card in the upper left is from 2012 and is my favorite of the bunch in terms of design (not sure what the card number prefix "MBC" is just yet). It's almost like a cross between a regular card and a Chrome refractor. I loves me some shiny!<br />
-Vintage-style minis. 'Nuff said.<br />
-And finally, the one with Buhner may not <i>technically</i> be a Griffey, but in my book a shot of these slugging teammates definitely counts!<br />
<br />
As a bonus, this trade pushes my Griffey collection past the 700 mark~!<br />

Johnson is one of my top 5 favorite players of all time, so I'm very happy for him, and Biggio really got robbed last year. Sadly another of my all-time favorites (Jeff Bagwell) will have to wait another year.....<br />
<br />
Today we have the <a href="http://thecommoncardman.blogspot.com/2014/12/common-cards-uncommon-photography.html">second half</a> of my feature on broken bat cards. Enjoy!<br />
<br />
<b><u>1998 Leaf Jose Canseco #109</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmSAdecEnxK5ppKp6keHt2_ECuQq3Ymr6hecCyr_RVJBYjEzJdNvExswnocvseLbCkAXAX9Pp6DXF7rpBdnSEGMHmSM-e903rkXqSTbTToj1NvvPzm0Fvwcewndy_gnewrqSAkmzXtI01h/s1600/Splinters+Canseco+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmSAdecEnxK5ppKp6keHt2_ECuQq3Ymr6hecCyr_RVJBYjEzJdNvExswnocvseLbCkAXAX9Pp6DXF7rpBdnSEGMHmSM-e903rkXqSTbTToj1NvvPzm0Fvwcewndy_gnewrqSAkmzXtI01h/s1600/Splinters+Canseco+2.jpg" height="320" width="228" /></a></div>
<br />
Something about this one just makes me giggle. I think it is the intense look of "I'm admiring a titanic blast" on his face, meanwhile all he has is a bat stub.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2007 Upper Deck Roger Clemens #339</u></b><br />

The second pitcher featured in this series. Looking at the angle that bat barrel is flying off in I hope the photographer was far away!<br />

<br />
Can't get much more sawed-off than that.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2007 Upper Deck Ramon Martinez #778</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgomPxXFOXwjLowNHiybCPhDo49FoMtqsBWaxOmz4Rb2i4lb8cOjkUN46zx147DSfd4y6OHqn_rxVWNJ4PTthnaOJDr9CfflqDPFW_J1V-F7c_1j6bNFHy33vfwNEU4ib4C7QDH1BbrYBrn/s1600/Splinters+Martinez.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgomPxXFOXwjLowNHiybCPhDo49FoMtqsBWaxOmz4Rb2i4lb8cOjkUN46zx147DSfd4y6OHqn_rxVWNJ4PTthnaOJDr9CfflqDPFW_J1V-F7c_1j6bNFHy33vfwNEU4ib4C7QDH1BbrYBrn/s1600/Splinters+Martinez.jpg" height="320" width="236" /></a></div>
<br />
Our third entry from 2007 Upper Deck, I guess flying lumber was a real theme that year! This one stands out for how weirdly clean the break is. It looks like somebody literally sawed straight through it. <br />
<br />
<b><u>1998 Pinnacle Rondell White #81</u></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYTvVWer8g-VHMCampfXpJjTT5OBgI1QTsMyR0xizbDuDzTCWODzoRm9HNgbsyxq6AbRV7t4EIkC1EpLSZGW6Hn3J7dcrFPmylMFu7OWpTCDQgyFZURD5DEDd5KUYj4xJJvrfFVIxeEoHq/s1600/Splinters+White.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYTvVWer8g-VHMCampfXpJjTT5OBgI1QTsMyR0xizbDuDzTCWODzoRm9HNgbsyxq6AbRV7t4EIkC1EpLSZGW6Hn3J7dcrFPmylMFu7OWpTCDQgyFZURD5DEDd5KUYj4xJJvrfFVIxeEoHq/s1600/Splinters+White.jpg" height="233" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And finally, an especially sharp-looking bit of shrapnel sailing out into the field of play. I've always been amazed that there haven't been more injuries from broken bats over the years, if not from bats sailing into a fielder then from batters got their hands and/or fingers sliced. I did read about one particularly nasty incident in the book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Big-Hair-Plastic-Grass-Baseball/dp/1250007240">Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s</a>" (a fun read by the way) - in 1976, Dodger Steve Yeager was hit in the <i>throat</i> by a shard of a broken bat while standing in the on-deck circle. He ended up needing surgery on his esophagus, but thankfully he was OK. The incident led Dodger trainer Bill Buhler to invent the neck guard we see hanging from catcher's masks today.<br />
<br />

So many in fact that I was able to set aside a few groups that fell into "themes." So without further ado:<br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-size: large;">"Splendid Splinters" (Part I) - Cards Featuring Broken Bats~!</span></b><br />

A beautiful shot. I love that they got both halves of the bat and the ball in the same picture.<br />
<br />

Chili looks like he is about to test that old saying that there's no shivving in baseball.<br />
<br />
<b><u>2007 Upper Deck Carlos Zambrano #283</u></b><br />

I think Jay got just a <i>little</i> bit jammed, seeing as how he has approximately zero arm extension on this swing.<br />

I can't say I've ever seen a broken bat go backwards or towards the dugout, but that sure appears to be what is going on in this picture.<br />

That's all for today, more to come in the next post!Milwaukee Southpawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07760646759273077821noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3478449641509656566.post-33550104551743613242014-12-17T21:28:00.001-08:002014-12-17T21:31:22.221-08:002015 Topps - A Sight For Sore EyesI'm guessing many of you already commented on the upcoming Topps baseball release back in August when the cards were first previewed. However, as I've been away from the blog for a while I only just looked them up today, so I thought I would chip in my 2 cents.<br />
<br />
Since returning to card collecting on a regular basis I've found myself growing more and more frustrated by the card designs Topps puts out. Now don't get me wrong, none of them have been "bad" per se, but they have all been so plain and similar. I mean, how many times can you put out a set with a white border, silver foil, and little else?<br />

<br />
Now I may not like all of those (I've always hated the 1986 design), but 25-plus years later and I can tell you without hesitation exactly which year those cards are from. 25 years from now I highly doubt I'll be able to say the same about the 2010-2014 Topps issues. I would be happy to endure the occasional ugly design to get others that are fresh and exciting.<br />
<br />
Which is why I was so happy to see the new design for the 2015 set:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<br />
Is...is that COLOR?? And colors that change for each team??<br />
<br />
Seriously, this made me SO happy. Thank you Topps for doing something a little different. And please, MORE of this!!<br />
<br />
As far as the other previews of the new set, I am definitely interested to see what the Rainbow Foil parallels look like. Shiny and colorful are almost always a hit with me, so I could easily envision myself putting together a Brewers team set if they turn out nice.<br />
<br />
Of the inserts we know about, I love it when cards and history intersect, so I am most intrigued by the Baseball/History set which combines famous historical events with baseball events that happened on the same day:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Dy7XUuOV6B7FHY4CojY7y-OC_8Jl3OglB-rvh98ZBW1qrcln6KAzqW_jpdEGSk4c8TScmpvcgIUb8aO4EcV6gTwfJPAHRuMgeCIlqt_Fs26gHUS7p1bt3yK-4w0yH7-8bXzRq9yqCKxI/s1600/2015Toppshistory.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7Dy7XUuOV6B7FHY4CojY7y-OC_8Jl3OglB-rvh98ZBW1qrcln6KAzqW_jpdEGSk4c8TScmpvcgIUb8aO4EcV6gTwfJPAHRuMgeCIlqt_Fs26gHUS7p1bt3yK-4w0yH7-8bXzRq9yqCKxI/s1600/2015Toppshistory.jpg" height="209" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The Gallery of Greats set also looks nice. I am hoping that in person they have a little more of a "painting" feel to them, but it appears in this image that they are just regular photos:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuzYE-jRHuglZUOj_0sHflIRS_QNlYiVzyAoIoZ9WEVw-cBa_r3acuL3j51TWzEVWcgPpjVariCfUxUpZp7wJY76hMsKhReij_M9XafXjwXKb_PuxkCF0y_Jq_BlBM_91_Yolg-Kri1iKd/s1600/2015Toppsgallery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuzYE-jRHuglZUOj_0sHflIRS_QNlYiVzyAoIoZ9WEVw-cBa_r3acuL3j51TWzEVWcgPpjVariCfUxUpZp7wJY76hMsKhReij_M9XafXjwXKb_PuxkCF0y_Jq_BlBM_91_Yolg-Kri1iKd/s1600/2015Toppsgallery.jpg" height="320" width="227" /></a></div>
<br />
I also love the "Future Stars" rainbow logo pin cards. I very much hope that a Brewer is included in that set because that card will immediately go onto my want list:<br />
<br />

(Gonna have to do something about that broken scanner, this "taking pictures with my phone" thing isn't gonna cut it.)<br />
<br />
That brings me up to 520 out of 990 for the full set. (Not counting the Hall of Fame SPs....yet....) Unfortunately it is becoming very clear that finishing this set is going to be a looooong-term project, and also a bit pricey. To this point I've been able to selectively hit the "pick X number of cards" lots to get just the cards I need at around 30-45 cents per card, however now that we are 3 years removed from this set's debut those eBay listings are few and far between. It isn't hard to find any individual card I might need, but you usually have to pay more like $1 per card for the single card listings. There are a couple big lots out there right now but they are the "you're buying the whole lot, take it or leave it" type, and I have too many of the cards in the lot to make it worthwhile.<br />
<br />
As always, if any of you out there in the blogosphere have some of the Platinum Diamonds I need, I am willing to trade. :)<br />

It's quite a mix of topics - there are old bicycles, autographs, troll dolls, banana stickers (who knew there were so many???), you name it. My favorite was the guy who had a huge collection of playing cards of all shapes and sizes, from all kinds of different countries and time periods. My wife has shown her collection of Civil Defense items a couple times now, and this year for the first time I signed up to show my card collection!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja-WuU3_imcbeLOq7WRiYwHV8F5Z5-TSSKjd_yNbJzvw3m2whEYy895GgmhAaWcEo3tH1tfNjDEQFc6b5Flyg5d75_j0VsN8wesX0hVAWA9qmLlHJAdgk3RJyYB7WSMelOLR6sJ9ZYwYD3/s1600/Collector+portrait-Jones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEja-WuU3_imcbeLOq7WRiYwHV8F5Z5-TSSKjd_yNbJzvw3m2whEYy895GgmhAaWcEo3tH1tfNjDEQFc6b5Flyg5d75_j0VsN8wesX0hVAWA9qmLlHJAdgk3RJyYB7WSMelOLR6sJ9ZYwYD3/s1600/Collector+portrait-Jones.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I almost immediately realized I had brought WAY more stuff than I could fit onto one table, so I decided to show off some of my more interesting "hit" cards, my Brewer collection, and some of my favorite and/or most visually grabbing Griffeys. The 24 karat gold reprint of Griffey's 1989 Fleer rookie card was one of the more popular items with the visitors (thank you Google image search for saving me some time):<br />

The kids seemed to get a kick out of the 1992 Upper Deck Comic Ball hologram that shows Wile E. Coyote trying to trip Griffey:<br />

However, <a href="http://thecommoncardman.blogspot.com/2012/10/possibly-most-unique-and-cool-addition.html">my rare reprint of the "Original Baseball Card"</a> was definitely the highlight for my table. Almost everyone was interested in that one!:</div>

Preparing for Collector's Day also had another huge positive side effect - it finally forced me to spend some time organizing my collection! I now have 2 giant binders full of nothing but Milwaukee Brewer cards, a binder full of cards for my <a href="http://thecommoncardman.blogspot.com/2012/04/common-cards-uncommon-photography-iii.html">"Common Card, Uncommon Photography"</a> series, and a couple binders full of miscellaneous star cards, old 1990s inserts, and other random cards I like. All in all, a great experience!</div>

I didn't anticipate falling off the face of the blogging Earth shortly thereafter. But here at The Common (Card) Man, when we say there are going to be prizes for a contest, then dammit, there's gonna be prizes, even if they are months late!<br />
<br />
Since I didn't get to do the originally planned mid-season prize, I decided to award prizes to the top 2 finishers for the year. And boy was it a close one! Here are the results:<br />
<br />
1. Dhoff - 128 points<br />
2. Greg Zakwin - 127<br />
3.The Diamond King - 119<br />
4. Wilson - 113<br />
5. Coronado2010 - 110<br />
6. gcrl - 109<br />
7. Play at the Plate - 108<br />
8. (tie) P-Town Tom & Dion's IP Autos Only - 98<br />
10. The Lost Collector - 79<br />
11. Superduperman99 - 75<br />
12. Scott Crawford - 66<br />

<br />
Dhoff and Greg Zakwin were neck and neck, but it was Dhoff nailing the Wins leader (Max Scherzer) that sealed the deal. I will be reaching out to you guys about sending some prizes.<br />
<br />
While picking the World Series winner wasn't officially part of the contest, everyone entered a pick - not only did no one pick the Red Sox to win it all, <b><i><u>not one person even picked them to make the playoffs</u></i></b>! No one said predicting the future is easy!<br />
<br />
People were generally more successful picking the playoff teams for the National League, though no one picked Pittsburgh to reach the postseason. The LA Angels were easily the most disappointing team of the year judging by how heavily they were picked.<br />
<br />
For the stats categories, picking Clayton Kershaw in the pitching categories was generally a recipe for success. The offensive categories were tougher, though you couldn't go too wrong picking Miguel Cabrera.<br />
<br />
Thanks to everyone for participating! I plan on doing it again this year so I hope to see all of you back again!Milwaukee Southpawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07760646759273077821noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3478449641509656566.post-23639875436753736122014-02-22T07:15:00.000-08:002014-02-22T07:15:24.625-08:00Newest Addition to the Griffey CollectionI always appreciate quality photography, like on my newest Griffey card - a 1997 Topps Photo Gallery insert:<br />

A perfect shot capturing the classic Griffey home run follow through! The camera frame corners in gold foil are a nice touch as well.Milwaukee Southpawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07760646759273077821noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3478449641509656566.post-61977754759562463332014-02-16T08:43:00.000-08:002014-02-16T08:43:14.899-08:00A Return With Rockin' Robin2013 was an....interesting...year. I had several unexpected events come up, some of which pretty much eliminated my card budget, and so I dropped off the blogging map. The good news is I made it through all the stress of last year, and I'm hoping to pick up where I left off here at the blog (at least on a limited basis).<br />
<br />
To that end, I made my first eBay purchase in quite a while and added this cool Robin Yount card to my Brewers collection:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCLpHagz8uh1miqbhg0qCQGkeHjEsZTEY8_asPITv0G-V2ynV5d7s4_y3ldKsPDjZSxOuv05vh7Y7sgVIdywfiWBraDzhYI_QV30hxQ-9q5_jGFX5n3On_I3KhCcCWUerFLEjBi4K8CHv/s1600/Yount+Number+Patch.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpCLpHagz8uh1miqbhg0qCQGkeHjEsZTEY8_asPITv0G-V2ynV5d7s4_y3ldKsPDjZSxOuv05vh7Y7sgVIdywfiWBraDzhYI_QV30hxQ-9q5_jGFX5n3On_I3KhCcCWUerFLEjBi4K8CHv/s1600/Yount+Number+Patch.JPG" height="227" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've really grown to like these patch cards, even if they are "manufactured relics" - I just think a lot of them look cool! Too bad there isn't a Paul Molitor card to go with it...<br />
<br />
I also lucked out on price - I saw most of these listed for $12-$15, but I managed to snag mine for just $7 including shipping.Milwaukee Southpawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07760646759273077821noreply@blogger.com3
