A Return With Rockin' Robin

2013 was an....interesting...year.  I had several unexpected events come up, some of which pretty much eliminated my card budget, and so I dropped off the blogging map.  The good news is I made it through all the stress of last year, and I'm hoping to pick up where I left off here at the blog (at least on a limited basis).

To that end, I made my first eBay purchase in quite a while and added this cool Robin Yount card to my Brewers collection:

I've really grown to like these patch cards, even if they are "manufactured relics" - I just think a lot of them look cool!  Too bad there isn't a Paul Molitor card to go with it...

I also lucked out on price - I saw most of these listed for $12-$15, but I managed to snag mine for just $7 including shipping.

Trade with Plaschke, Thy Sweater is Argyle

The moment I hinted that I had pulled a Dodger hit in my box of Series 1 Topps, Greg from Plaschke, Thy Sweater is Argyle was ready to do a deal.  He happily took my Clayton Kershaw auto, and in return he sent me a couple sweet hits for my collection.

First, a nice bat card of The Kid:

Greg had also offered me a card of a former Milwaukee Admiral that is now skating for their parent club, the Nashville Predators.  I told him that I don't really collect hockey much, but I would take a card of former Admirals-turned-Predators goalie Pekka Rinne if he had one, not that I actually expected he would.  To my surprise he quickly replied back that he did indeed have a Pekka auto!:

Thanks for a great trade Greg!

One more thing - as a teaser for my next post, I reached a big milestone in my collection this week.  Tune in next time to find out what it is!

It Came From the Card Closet~!! - Part 2

My second in a series of posts on what I found while cleaning out my old closet full of baseball cards.  :)

In one of the many, many piles of cards I found a whole cache of Younts all grouped together, and surprisingly (given how they were stored) they also are in excellent shape.  For whatever reason most of them were 1980s Donruss, so let's take a trip through the decade!:

Unfortunately, 1985 is the one year I didn't have in this stack.

I LOVE this painting of Yount.  This is one of my new favorite cards of all time!

It was so cool finding these in the middle of a random stack of commons.  I seem to recall deciding to gather up all of my Yount cards around the same time as I decided to start a Griffey collection.  Obviously the Yount collection didn't quite get off the ground.  Better late than never!

Previous Trivia Question:

I actually didn't know this until just yesterday when I went looking for Opening Day trivia, but my boy Ken Griffey Jr. is the co-record holder for most home runs on Opening Day with 8.  What Hall of Fame outfielder is he tied with?

Answer:  Frank Robinson also hit 8 homers on Opening Day

Today's Trivia Question:

What dubious distinction is held by pitcher Ken Johnson?

Sweet Yount Card from eBay

It's been a hectic few weeks, and I apologize for the blog being a little light on posts recently.  However, I've got a whole bunch of cards scanned in and ready to go now, so there is going to be a lot of good stuff coming over the next couple weeks.  I'm also going to debut a new feature for the blog this week to coincide with the start of the 2011 baseball season (hint: it's going to involve Strat-o-Matic Baseball), so be sure to tune in!

For today, I have a really cool card my girlfriend Jo found on eBay:

Stadium Club Member's Only from 1992-93
An awesome card capturing one of the great moments in Brewers franchise history.  I still remember when the Brewers came home to County Stadium and Yount was sitting on 2,997 hits, and my Mom telling me I could pick just ONE game to go to.  As an optimistic 10 year old, I of course thought Yount was fully capable of getting 3 hits in one game, so I chose to go to the first game.  Unfortunately "The Kid" only got one hit that night, and I missed my chance at witnessing history in person.  Looking back I don't feel too bad about it, because while my older and wiser self wouldn't have picked the game when he was 3 hits away, I would have gone the next day when he was only 2 hits away, and he only got one hit that game too.

On a side note, it's funny looking at the extremely old school County Stadium scoreboard on this card when we are just 10 days away from debuting a brand new, state of the art scoreboard at Miller Park.  We've come quite a long way since that old black and white board!
